The PlayStation 3 did not achieve the expected sales in the United States market, but that changed completely with the release of the PlayStation 4, making an outstanding comeback in the market and setting Sony’s console sales in the top 3.
Mat Piscatella, an analyst for NPD, tweeted:
“After 68 months in market, the PS4 has the 3rd highest time aligned Console installed base in US tracked history, trailing only the Wii and PS2. Xbox 360 and Xbox One are 4th and 5th. Home consoles in the US market continue to do very well on a comparative basis this gen.”
Mat also mentioned that the time frame in which sales are made isn’t the only factor that should be looked at and doesn’t show the full picture, for example, the Xbox 360 managed to sell more than the Wii lifetime but it’s second in sales after the PS2.
Mat also added that the Nintendo Switch is also doing well in the market, securing the fourth spot in fastest-selling consoles in the United States market.
We’re not sure how the PlayStation 5 will perform compared to the PlayStation 4, but according to Jim Ryan, the CEO for Playstation, the PlayStation 5 might be the last to represent traditional consoles, which means they don’t seem very optimistic and will be looking forward to keeping up with the demands of the market, which seems to be mobile gaming.
