A teenager allegedly spent around $20,000 of his parents’ money without their knowledge in Twitch donations, bits, and subscription.
The mother made a post on Twitch subreddit explaining the whole situation, her teenage child had spent $19,870.94 between June 14 and 30. She failed at getting the money back after several attempts and she turned to Reddit for a solution.
She preferred to remain anonymous to protect the identity of her son. The post attracted a lot of attention with the mother saying that “years of saving gone in 17 days.”
Apparently, the teenage Fortnite fan donated to popular Twitch streamers like Tfue, Gorb, and Ewokttv, and Atlanta Falcons.
According to the mother, her son had a debit card with a small balance to buy school lunches. He began transferring money from his mother’s account into his debit card in which he used to make the donations to streamers. She claims that her son might have seen her password while she was transferring money for him, or that she didn’t log out properly.
When the mother confronted her son, he knew he had spent a lot of money but was “shocked” when he found out the total amount.
“I contacted my bank as soon as I found out and they froze all of our accounts, and his debit card was canceled,” she said. “Unless I press charges against my son, they will not help as this is considered friendly fraud.”
The mother contacted both Twitch and Amazon but hasn’t received a response in over two weeks. She also sent registered mail to Twitch CEO Emmett Shear and Amazon’s legal team but claims she hasn’t heard back yet.
She also reached out to the five streamers about getting the money back. Benkert and Leonard have responded to the mother and still waits on the other three streamers.
